Photography Composition – Lines

As an amateur photographer, I rarely think about the technical aspect of capturing pictures with my compact camera or mobile phone. Subconsciously though, the eye is generally drawn toward certain aspects of a visual frame. One of these is the “line”.

A key element of photography composition, lines add impact and tell a visual story by leading the viewer’s eye across the scene. Lines may be straight or curved. They appear in various forms such as the direction of a road, vertical edges of a tall building and curve of a coastline.

Digging through my travel archives, I found many examples of photographs where lines emphasized the scene. Here are some of them.

  1. I could relate to this.
For me, any sort of a ‘line’, as you said, gives a sort of structure and coherence to the frame.
    Loved your shots!
